Ethiopia has more than 150 varieties of coffee that are cultivated in the farm around the country. Besides, there are thousands of categorized and registered genotypes in the state owned test farms around the country.

These varieties are generally categorized into seven coffee growing regions of Ethiopia; Sidamo, Yirgacheffe,Limmu,Harar, Djimma, Nekemte, Keffa. To meet the diversified coffee variety requirements of its buyers, EBG has established its presence in those seven major coffee producing regions from Ethiopia.


Oil Seeds and Pulses Export

There are about 146 crop types in Ethiopia and Oilseeds are among the major ones. Sesame, Soybean and Niger seed dominate largely the oil seeds category.

Ethiopia’s oilseed sector plays an important role in generating foreign exchange earnings.  The three major oilseed crops (sesame, soybean, and niger seed) contribute to nearly 20% of Ethiopia’s total agricultural export earnings, second only to coffee. In  2019/20 exports of sesame, Niger seed, and soybeans generated nearly $430 million in export earnings. In addition, the oilseed sector provides income to millions of growers and others market actors along the value chain.

Niger Seed is Oil Crop of Ethiopia origin like Coffee. Ethiopia is one of the centers of biodiversity for several Oilseeds which can be considered as specialty high value seeds on the international market. The country is known for its high quality organic product of different types of oil seeds. Among these sesame seeds, Niger seeds, Lin seed and sunflower seed are the major ones.

Sesame is the second highest foreign currency earner for Ethiopia after Coffee. Ethiopian whitish Humerra sesame seed is the world leading brand for its high quality. It is produced in the fertile low land of north western parts of the country. The other major brand next to Humera sesame is whitish Wollega Sesame Seed which is produced in the south western parts of the country.

Ethiopia is one of the leading sesame seed producer and exporter countries in the world. While China and India are the top consumers of sesame seed, Ethiopia exports almost all of its products to the rest of the world.

Export Trends: Key export oilseeds in Ethiopia are sesame seeds, Niger seeds, and soybeans. The production and export of these three products increased over the last decade encouraged by an increasing local price. All of the three oilseed products are traded at ECX.  The total production of oilseeds is expected to be about 840,000 metric tons.   Sesame seed export represents 67% of the oilseeds export. Sesame is the most important export cash crop in Ethiopia.   The Ministry of Trade indicated that the 2020 performance is much better than in 2019. Ethiopia’s sesame seed export valued USD 343 million.


Minerals (Marble) Export

Ethiopia’s export of marble and granite related items are not significant in terms of value. The export value in 2019 was USD 510,000. The marble export value was about USD 20,000. The international marble and related item import value are about USD 1.2 billion (2019). The low performance of export may indicate an export opportunity. Major importing countries of marbles are Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Qatar. The booming construction sector triggered the demand in the Middle East. The proximity to a major importing country is an opportunity for Ethiopia. 

EBG shall focus on high-quality products through owning quarry, cutting and polishing facility to attract and satisfy buyers.


Livestock Export

Ethiopia is believed to have the largest livestock population in Africa. This livestock sector has been contributing considerable portion to the economy of the country, and still promising to rally round the economic development of the country. It is eminent that livestock products and by-products in the form of meat, milk, honey, eggs, cheese, and butter supply etc. provide the needed animal proteins that contribute to the improvement of the nutritional status of the people. Livestock also plays an important role in providing export commodities, such as live animals, hides, and skins to earn foreign exchanges to the country

The sub sector contributes 12 and 33% to the total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and agricultural Gross Domestic Product (GDP), respectively, and provides livelihood for 65% of the population and livestock accounted for 10.6% of Ethiopia’s export income,

Cattle Population: According to CSA report of Ethiopia Report, the estimates of cattle for the rural and pastoral sedentary areas at country level are estimated to be about 65.35 million. Out of this total cattle population, the female cattle constitute about 55.90 percent and the remaining 44.10 percent are male cattle. 

Regarding age groups, the majority of the cattle population (that is about 60.78 percent) is in the 3 years and less than 10 years age category, with about 26.31 percent male and about 34.47 percent female. Moreover, about 17.57 percent are between age one and three years and those with age category 10 years and over took small portion i.e. 3.68 percent of the total estimated number of cattle.


Sheep and Goat Population: The estimated numbers and percentage distributions of sheep and goats in the rural sedentary areas of the country are about 39.89 million sheep are estimated to be found in the country, out of which about 70.28 percent are females, and about 29.72 percent are males. According to the survey result, the number of goats reported in the country is estimated to be about 50.50 million. Out of these total goats, 70.19 percent are females and about 29.8 percent are males.(CSA)
